Mangala Aarti

Sri Sri Guru-ashtaka

(By Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura)

Reciting the Guru Praṇāma prayer with deep devotion during the auspicious hour of brahma-muhūrta grants the rare fortune of direct service to Śrī Kṛṣṇa in Vṛndāvana at the time of death, as revealed by Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura.

Translation

(1) Just as a monsoon cloud showers rain to quench a forest fire, the spiritual master, receiving mercy from the boundless ocean of compassion, delivers the suffering souls from the blazing fire of material existence. Overflowing with divine qualities, he brings auspiciousness to all. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master.

(2) Absorbed in the sankīrtana movement of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, the spiritual master sings, dances, and plays musical instruments with ecstatic delight. Immersed in divine bliss, his body trembles, hairs stand on end, and streams of tears flow from his eyes. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master.

(3) Constantly engaged in the worship of the divine Deities Śrī Śrī Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa, the spiritual master lovingly decorates Them and cleanses Their temple. He expertly guides his disciples in such sacred service. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master.

(4) The spiritual master lovingly offers the four kinds of delectable food to Kṛṣṇa—those that are licked, chewed, drunk, and sucked. When he sees the Lord’s devotees joyfully honoring the prasāda, he becomes fully satisfied. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master.

(5) Eternally yearning to relish the boundless sweetness of the divine pastimes, qualities, forms, and names of Śrī Rādhikā and Mādhava, the spiritual master immerses himself in this nectar moment by moment. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master.

(6) Expert in assisting the gopīs in their artistic arrangements, the spiritual master lovingly helps facilitate the divine romantic pastimes of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa in the secluded groves of Vṛndāvana. So dearly beloved is he for this unmatched service. I offer my most humble obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master.

(7) Revered by all scriptures and saintly authorities, the spiritual master is to be honored as much as the Supreme Lord Himself, for he is the Lord’s most confidential servant. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master, the true representative of Śrī Hari.

(8) By the mercy of the spiritual master, one attains the grace of the Supreme Lord; without his blessings, progress is impossible. Therefore, meditating upon him and glorifying his virtues at dawn, noon, and dusk, I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master.
